Raising a Skier

When we met local Flagstaff family, Chris and Amy, over the summer, we fell in love with their zest for adventure and dedication to passing skiing on to future generations. Their eldest daughter, Porter, is 3-years old and is in her second season of skiing. We followed Porter and her family (including her grandparents!) around our beginner terrain, Hart Prairie, to see what it takes to grow the next generation of little rippers.

Chris has taken the reigns (literally) and is teaching his daughter himself. If you want your kids to be lifelong skiers (or snowboarders!), you can trust our professional ...

New Trails and a Snowmaking Update

We don’t always put the weather forecast in the hands of a groundhog but when Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow earlier this month (signifying 6 more weeks of winter), we were stoked! The snow rolled in on Monday morning and has been delivering off and on all week. To see our favorite photos from this week’s snow, see our photo blog.

We LOVE Valentine’s Day powder!

While our guests have been enjoying the powder, our mountain crews have been making snow, shaping terrain park features and grooming out corduroy. As a result of their hard work coupled with the new snow, three ...

An Inside Look at Snowbowl’s Terrain Parks

At Snowbowl, we provide terrain parks and features for every ability level. That means there is something for everyone to enjoy on the mountain!

A snowboarder jumps off a man-made cactus park feature

To get a better understanding of our different terrain park offerings, we interviewed Josh Heydorn, Supervisor at Sunset Terrain Parks. He filled us in on the differences between our parks, what it takes to maintain the features, and how upkeep is a year-round job!

What does it take to maintain a terrain park? The average skier or snowboarder moves around 2000lbs of snow in a typical skiing day. With ...

Snowbowl’s Olympic Ties

The Winter Olympics are just around the corner and everyone is getting excited! With participants from all around the world competing, it’s interesting to see just how many Flagstaff and Snowbowl connections there are in the Olympic community.

Did you know the current U.S. Freeskiing Halfpipe, Slopestyle and Big Air Head Coach, Mike Jankowski, started in snow sports at Snowbowl? And Phil McNichol, a former head coach of U.S. Men’s Olympic Alpine Team, started out as an instructor at Snowbowl? Under McNichol’s guidance, U.S. skiers had four World Championship titles and eight medals, 42 World Cup victories, plus an Olympic Gold ...

Upper Ridge is OPEN!

Eleven inches of powder coated the mountain this weekend, creating a picture-perfect powder day and ideal conditions for snowmaking. While skiers and riders had a blast carving down the slopes, our snowmaking and mountain ops crews worked overtime.

Snowmaking continues. Photo taken January 22nd.

Their efforts were a huge success: we’re opening our first black run of the season today! Upper Ridge has been our target for several weeks now and last weekend’s snow was the icing on the cake. Expert skiers will love the steeper grade and more challenging terrain!

Powder Day: January 20, 2018

January 2018 has been good to Snowbowl so far! After the 14″ storm last week, the slopes picked up another 11″ of powder this Saturday. The storm also brought cooler temperatures, meaning our snowmakers were able to make even more snow. Next to open: our first black diamond run – Upper Ridge, plus several intermediate level trails serviced by Humphreys Peak Quad.

The storm cleared by Sunday morning leaving the mountain with bluebird skies and perfect snow conditions! See today’s Snow Report and enjoy a few of our favorite photos from this storm:

Learn to Uplift on the Hart Prairie Quad

Jaime Gonzalez, Ski & Ride School Director

January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and to mark the occasion, we interviewed Jaime Gonzalez, our Ski and Snowboard School Director, about the most important aspects of Snowbowl’s brand new Hart Prairie Quad and beginner terrain.

How does the new Hart Prairie Quad and conveyor positively impact first-time skiers and riders?

Hart Prairie has always been one of the greatest beginner areas in the west. The addition of the new Hart Prairie Quad lift now complements the great terrain we have. Skiers and boarders now can enjoy shorter lift lines, which means one ...

The last few weeks have been full of exciting days on the mountain. From Santa’s visit on the slopes to the opening of two terrain parks (with 20 features!), we’ve been working hard and having fun doing it!

December 25, 2017

With snow in the forecast, our snowmakers are taking advantage of cooler night temperatures to make as much snow as possible! We’re anticipating a couple inches of Mother Nature’s best, which will give our crews a leg up to open new terrain.

Merry Christmas from James Coleman, Snowbowl Owner!

Friends of Snowbowl,

Today is a day we’re all reminded of life’s blessings, and I want to personally express how grateful I am to be a part of this ski area and a part of your lives. It’s been an exciting three years: from adding a new lift every year (including Arizona’s first and only high-speed six-person lift) to improving our snowmaking capacities. I’m thankful to stand on the shoulders of many legends who came before me: men and women who were passionate about skiing – and I’m blessed to continue that vision.

There’s nothing more exciting than studying the mountain, planning ...
