The New Hart Prairie Lift is Now Open!

Ava overseeing snowmaking efforts This week’s cold temperatures provided optimal snowmaking conditions, resulting in the most productive run this season. Mountain crews made snow every day this week starting their run on Monday morning. All of this progress can only mean one thing: more terrain is now open including our new lift!

The Hart Prairie quad started turning for the first time this morning. Our third new lift in three years services the largest beginner terrain in the southwest, Hart Prairie, and features a state of the art loading ...

Grand Canyon Express is Open!

Arizona’s only 6-person high-speed chairlift — Grand Canyon Express — is now open!

With the opening of Grand Canyon Express, new intermediate terrain (including Logjam and RoundUp) is officially open for skiing and riding. See the Snow Report for the entire list of open trails.

The crews are making snow around the clock. Photo taken 12/6/17.

The temperatures are predicted to remain favorable for snowmaking all week, so the crews anticipate opening beginner terrain (including Little Spruce Conveyor and our brand new Hart Prairie Quad lift) by the weekend. Once beginner terrain is open, we’ll start rolling ...

Ava’s First Year in Review

Ava, Snowbowl’s very own Avalanche dog, turns one on Sunday December 3rd! Turning one year old is a big mile marker in the training of an avalanche dog. The first year of training is primarily focused on laying the foundation for searching.

Ava spent the summer with her handler Hailey, living in Colorado and traveling all over the west. Ava joined Hailey on river, backpacking, and camping trips, as well as many hikes. In addition to enjoying her active life, Ava did plenty of dryland search drills and obedience sessions to prepare her for work as an Avy dog.

Hailey kept all ...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Friends of Snowbowl,

The Snowbowl team wanted to send our gratitude to the community for your support of the mountain, our growth, and continued improvement efforts. It’s been an exciting 80 years and we can’t wait to see what is in store for our mountain next. And with Thanksgiving today, we wanted to give thanks to our valued passholders, hard-working staff, mountain operations and snowmaking teams, and the Flagstaff community at large.

It’s been several years of growth and everyone on the Snowbowl team is incredibly proud of how far we have come thus far. This season, we hope the new Hart ...

Opening Day is November 21!

Opening Day is November 21! By: JR Murray

It is always an interesting decision to make when to open the ski area.  No two seasons are ever alike but with our impressive snowmaking system, it has become more certain.  All we need to do is take advantage of every cold night and make as much snow as possible.  With daily evaluation, the mountain operations team and I, push and groom until we determine there is enough snow to open. This year October and November have been warmer than normal and our production was limited.  However, this past weekend provided the best production ...

Hart Prairie Lift is Now Complete!

We’re proud to report construction was completed ahead of schedule on the new Hart Prairie quad! The lift boasts a loading conveyor (similar to a moving sidewalk and designed to make loading the lift easier), soft seat cushions, leg rests and restraining bars have all been installed.

Concrete arches are now installed on the pedestrian overpass which connects Hart Prairie lodge with the Grand Canyon Express and Sunset lifts, eliminating the crosswalk. The overpass is scheduled to be completed by early December!

Progress continues on our new ski-in, ski-out restaurant, Fremont Restaurant and Bar. The aluminum framing and wall installation are now complete. Next up, large ...

Installing the Hart Prairie Chairs, Making Snow, and Frosty Peaks

We’ve had a busy week at Snowbowl with major construction milestones, continued snowmaking, and a dusting of snow on the peaks. Here’s your inside look at this week’s on-mountain action.

Shiny, new chairs waiting for their turn on the lift.

The crew measures the precise distance between chairs as they install each one. They also check to make sure the bullwheel is keeping perfect tension in the rope.

Chairs are sent up the mountain as new ones are continually added.

A crewmember secures the grip on the chairs.

On November 8th, Mother Nature provided a frosty ...

A Mom’s take on Snowburners

By: Stacey Glaser

Two winters ago, when my daughters were 6 and 8, I enrolled them in Purgatory’s local ski school program, Snowburners. This long-standing program has introduced and sharpened the ski and snowboard skills of hundreds of kids every season – and I’m really excited Snowburners is now available at our sister ski area, Snowbowl.

As a parent, here is what I love about Snowburners and the lessons I learned along the way:

Snowburners will improve your kids’ skills.

Some of my friends have dreams of their kids making it to the Olympics. Others have aspirations of simply being able to ski together, ...

Behind the Scenes with Dale and His Snowmaking Team

As the 2017-2018 winter season gets closer, the snowmaking team at Arizona Snowbowl is ready. After a summer of repairing, replacing, and cleaning parts, Dale Haglin and his crew placed the snow guns along the slopes for their inaugural tests. After testing was complete and the snow guns were strategically placed, the waiting game for cooler temperatures began.

Dale Haglin, Director of Mountain Operations

On September 23rd, thanks to the efficient work by Dale and his team, Snowbowl became the first resort in the country to begin making snow. While the temperatures have stayed high in October, the crew has continued to make snow as ...

Installing New High-Speed 6-Pack Lift Terminals & Snowmaking Equipment Ready for the Season!

Labor Day is the turning point for Snowbowl and every ski area. The ski Bottom Terminalseason will arrive quickly, and we have many projects to complete. The new Grand Canyon Express high-speed 6-person lift remains our number one priority. This week, the bottom terminal machinery was delivered, and all the sheave assemblies (cable support wheels) with towers will arrive before the weekend. The bottom terminal grading turned out excellent with new grass already growing on the slopes (see photo on right). Our first helicopter mission is scheduled for late next week when POMA crews will pour concrete for the upper ...
