The First One on the Mountain
by J.R. Murray, General Manager
With this season’s snowfall already topping 143 inches (and it’s only January!), we are 100% open and skiing great! As General Manager, I have the opportunity to make sure that the mountain is skiing its best before guests arrive each day. For my first run I like to ski Ridge into Northstar or Agassiz from the Grand Canyon Express lift. Ridge is a beautiful run—it’s steep, narrow and well-groomed, making it our signature trail.
After my first run I head back up the Grand Canyon Express to ski Ridge to Phoenix or Blackjack. I really enjoy skiing the bumps on skier’s left of Volcano. If my legs get tired, I just veer back into the corduroy where it is steep and wide and take bigger, sweeping turns.
For my last (and favorite!) run, I take the Agassiz lift and ski down White Lightning to Yogi Catwalk over to the top of Humphrey’s lift, then cruise down Route 66 past the Humphrey’s Hut, and finish up on Hart Prairie. I like to finish on Hart Prairie because I get to see beginner skiers and snowboarders working hard to improve their skills. I also enjoy the slope’s wide open skiing and the beautiful view towards the west!
Early morning runs give me the opportunity to see the mountain come alive each day. I check on the terrain and the grooming status first-hand, ride the lifts with local friends and even get to ski right to my office! Being able to ski almost every day, I am constantly rewarded with gorgeous views. The sheer beauty and solitude of the snowy peaks, especially late in the day, always reminds me how lucky I am to call this place home.
