Best Places to View Fall Colors
The autumn leaves are beginning to change at Snowbowl, which means there are plenty of opportunities to see the golden aspens! Whether you’re a hiker or prefer a leisurely drive through the trees, there’s an option for you. The colors peak in the first two weeks of October, so plan your trip today!
Aspen Nature Loop
Best Feature: Good For All Hiking Abilities
Perfect for any level of hiker, this 1.5 mile trail winds leisurely through colorful ponderosa and aspen groves. You’ll enjoy striking golden foliage, as well as views of the mountains. Plus, the trail is often less crowded than other fall color hikes around Flagstaff.
Best Feature: The Most Accessible
Take a 7-mile cruise or bike ride up Snowbowl Road to enjoy the scenic, changing colors of the mountains. The golden aspens are mixed in with the ponderosa groves, making the windy route shady, cool, and beautiful! And at the end of Snowbowl Road, be sure to stop at Agassiz Lodge for food or take the Scenic Chairlift for even more views!
Veit Springs Trail
Best Feature: Secluded
Looking for a shady, heavily-wooded trail? Veit Springs Trail begins about halfway up Snowbowl Road and winds through the largest stand of ponderosa pines in the world. Because the Veit Springs Trail doesn’t start or end at the ski area, you’re likely to find plenty of solitude! Look for the small parking lot on the right side of Snowbowl Road (going towards the ski area) to find the trailhead!
Best Feature: Scenery
Located about 6.5 miles up Snowbowl Road, Aspen Corner is a photographer’s paradise. It’s breathtaking to stand among the dense, bright yellow aspens and take in the beauty of autumn. From Aspen Corner, you can take an easy nature trail or even connect to the Arizona Trail for a longer trek! Find the parking lot on the left side of Snowbowl Road, going towards the ski area.
Don’t Miss the Peak Season for Changing Colors!
As the fall colors take you around the mountain this October, don’t forget to grab your camera and be sure to tag your photos with #FallForSnowbowl to be featured on the Arizona Snowbowl’s social media! There are many more places outside the San Francisco Peaks to enjoy the fall colors. We recommend following the City of Flagstaff’s LEAF-ometer. This online resource displays the transitioning colors from many locations across town.
