Delay Project for Powder
Arizona Snowbowl has chosen to delay an important lift maintenance project by one day so local skiers can take advantage of the new powder forecast for Sunday and Monday. The original plan was to close the Agassiz chairlift Monday through Wednesday so crews could replace the gearbox located in the drive station at the bottom terminal. Because of the forecast, up to two feet of snow beginning Saturday night and lingering all day Sunday, Monday will be one of the best ski days of the year.
The gearbox was originally scheduled for replacement before the holiday season, however, due to manufacturing and shipping delays in Switzerland, the gearbox arrived this week. The gearbox was ordered in July with a delivery date of November 17. Because the gearbox is no longer a standard option a completely new gearbox had to be constructed using 1986 specifications at the factory outside of Zurich, Switzerland.
J.R. Murray, Snowbowl General Manager, explains; “there is no good time to close a lift for maintenance, however, we want to make this exchange now so we do not have any issues or downtime with the current gearbox the remainder of the ski season. We decided to sandwich the project between two storm cycles, this Sunday and next Thursday”. For sure, we want the locals to enjoy the powder on Monday so we decided to delay one day.
Snowbowl has a certified technician on site to oversee the installation of the new gearbox and make sure the fit is perfect. The lift crew at Snowbowl has performed maintenance projects on the existing gearbox so many times they are experienced with this procedure. The lift is expected to operational Friday, January 11.
